Yecheon Cheongdan Noreum is a mask play handed down by idle youth in Yecheon, a commercial center of northern Gyengsangbuk-do. The play is non-speaking.
There is a story related to the origin of the play. Long time ago, a rich man in the southern province invited those skilled in dance, made masks, and organized a troupe travelling throughout the country for performance. He did so to search for his lost family. The rich man finally found the family among watchers at Dongbon-dong, Yecheon. Since then, fires occurred frequently at Yecheon. Elders in the town had idle youth reproduce the mask play, and then fires stopped. The mask play was handed down through talented men in the late Chosun Dynasty, and was performed on the sandy beach in early summer every year.
