Goseong Ogwangdae is a mask dance handed down at Goseong-eup, Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, and the current form emerged first in around 1920.
Like Owangdae or Yaryu in other localities, Goseong Ogwangdae includes the Mundungi (Leper) Episode, which is a cripple's dance, and the Yeongno (Bibi) Episode, in which the identity of Yangban is disclosed. The Old Monk Episode is short and simple. The mask dance preserves the originality and local color of mask dances in Gyeongsangnam-do as shown at such a scene that, when Halmi died, Bongsa chants a Buddhist sutra and the bier is carried with bier-carriers' song.
In the past, Ogwandae was usually performed in the court of an inn (Donghae-ri, Goseong-eup) or market streets on Daeboreum (the 15th of Jaunary by the lunar calendar), and on the Dano Festival when spring flowers were blooming and in autumn when leaves turned red and yellow. This shows that Goseong Ogwangdae is no more religious that entertaining.
Today, masks in Goseong Ogwangdae are made of paper clay, but the Goseong Ogwangdae Association keeps 17 wooden masks used in the 1960s, which shows that they were made of wood before.
