Dongrae Yaryu is a mask dance in Dongrae, Busan. Dongrae Yaryu is principally based on Sawon Nori on Daeboreum (the 15th of January by the lunar calendar).
Before performing Dongrae Yaryu, people held Gilnori in which around 300 performers participated. Gilnori was a parade that started at Sebyeong-gyo or Anrak-dong and ended at the marketplace. When the performers arriaved at the marketplace, not only the performers but also watchers danced a group dance to music. Each watcher danced wearing a mask that he/she had prepared.
The material of the mask is gourd. Moyangban-tal was covered with the hair of a dog or a rabbit. In general, the size, color and beauty of masks appearing in episodes varied. It was to emphasize the nature of each charters as well as to produce visual effects.
The five Yangban-tals in the Yangban Episode are all white and small, in contrast with large ugly reddish brown Malddugi-tal. Similarly, Halmi-tal in the Yeonggamˇ¤Halmi Episode is large, ugly and reddish brown while Yeonggam-tal is white, small and realistic. In the Yeongno Episode, in addition, Yeongno-tal is large and ugly but Yeongno Yangban-tal is small and fine.
