Suyeong Yaryu is a mask dance handed down at Suyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Busan. As for its origin, some say that it was learnt first from Daegwangdaepae that came from Chogye as it was invited by an admiral to encourage soldiers of the naval force, and some says that a Suyeong-born person living at Chogye learned it and initiated it at Suyeong.
To perform Suyeong Yaryu, the members of Yaryugye (Yaryu Circle) visited house to house and did Jisinbapgi from the 3rd 4th to 13th of January and got donations for mask dance performance. During the period of Jisinbapgi, some performers made masks and instruments for the performance at a clean place.
When the moon was rising on the 15th of January, townspeople and mask dancers gathered at Meonmulsaem (well) 1 km apart from the marketplace where the mask dance would be performed and started Gilnori. The procession of Gilnori proceeded in order of Sodeungdae, Daedeungdae, Pungakdae, Gilgunakdae, eight fairies, Suyangban, a troupe of mask dancers, Nanbonggapae and Yangsandopae. Suyangban rode an ox or a horse. At the center of the ground was a tall bamboo pole with a flag on the top of it, and colorful dragon lanterns, phoenix lanterns, turtle lanterns, lotus lanterns, etc. below the flag. Many ropes were suspended from the pole to all directions like cobweb, and hundreds of lanterns brought by Sodeungdae and Daedeungdae were hanged on the ropes.
When the procession of Gilnori arrived at the play ground, not only the performers but also watchers danced a group dance to music. Then the members of Yaryugye sold paper hats to watchers. Watchers bought and wore them, and danced with more gusto. After three or four hours of group dancing, people began the mask dance just after the midnight and enjoyed it until dawn. After enjoying the mask dance, people piled up the masks and paper hats, had a ceremony and burnt them to expel misfortune and inviting fortune.
Masks were made of gourd except Saja and Dambo made of bamboo baskets. Because they were burnt after being used, there is none remained.
