The figure of the ancestor.
Koruru, the object of ancestor worship, is a sculpture of the ancestor's figure. Its eyes are shaped like an owl's eyes. Marae (a public house), a traditional house of Maori, has a sculpture on its ridge that is on watch against enemies. It sticks out its tongue to scare enemies. The eyes, which look like an owl's eyes, are made of shells (paua shells). Tattoo on the face is as it is on the face of a living one.
